Letter to to the lead clinicians within A&E departments in Scotland..
Dear A&E colleagues,
In 2006, the ALSG, together with the Paediatric College (RCPCH),
launched a Child protection training package for junior trainees in
Paediatrics and in Emergency Medicine. The course is called Safeguarding
Children: Recognition and Response in Child Protection, and is designed
to teach juniors a structured approach to the initial contact,
assessment and management of potential Child Protection presentations.
It is a one day package, with CD, companion book, and training manual.
The course is starting to roll out across Scotland, but is at present
some way short of reaching the whole target audience of all juniors in
these specialities in early training years. One of the main problems is
trainer capacity.
In order to become an accredited trainer, most clinicians will need to
attend a short course in CP training techniques (largely involving small
group teaching methods, etc). This one day Masterclass will allow
trainers the opportunity to access the training materials for the
safeguarding course, and to consider running training days locally for
their own juniors.
Until recently, the Masterclass was only available in Manchester. We
have however been able to arrange for the Masterclass instructors to
come to Scotland to run 2 days of teaching in early May.(Thursday 10th,
and Friday 11th May) in the RCPCH Scottish Headquarters in Edinburgh.
As many A&E consultants will be GIC holders for ALSG courses, they will
be ideally placed to attend this course, and thereafter be in position
to deliver Quality Assured Child Protection training for their own
trainees.
If you are interested in participating in this Masterclass, please
contact us by email: Brian.Kelly@rah.scot.nhs.uk or carol.irvine@rcpch.ac.uk
If you have any questions, please get in touch with either myself, or
Carol Irvine at the RCPCH.
Information on the course is also available on the ALSG website;
