ACCS EM

The College has developed an assessment process for ACCS trainees using a balance of formative and summative assessment tools. Trainees should note that the Work Placed Based Assessments (WPBA) completed within the ED are intended to be formative. The content of these assessments are mapped to the curriculum.

During ACCS ST1 and 2 trainees will be required to demonstrate that they have acquired the basic competencies in EM, AM, Anaesthetics and ITU as outlined in the ACCS curriculum http://www.pmetb.org.uk/index.php?id=694.

This section only deals with the competencies expected during the EM component of training, for the remaining 3 ACCS please refer to http://www.pmetb.org.uk/index.php?id=694.

The ACCS guide to training is available for download at the bottom of this page.

Normally trainees will be allocated an ES for the whole of the ACCS program. This is likely to be from the speciality that the trainee starts in (or from the parent speciality i.e. EM for the EM ACCS trainee). However depending on the geographical nature of the rotation, trainees may have more than one ES, but should retain one overall ES (or Clinical tutor) for the 2 year period. The overall ES is responsible for completing the annual STR.

It is essential that trainees meet with their ES for each component of their ACCS rotation, at the beginning, middle and end of the post i.e. three times every 6 months. If part of the rotation is reduced to 3/12 e.g. for ITU, then a meeting at the beginning and end would suffice.

At the start of the EM ACCS post educational objectives will be set and agreed with each trainee. At least 6 WPBA assessments will need to be completed and each trainee is allowed to choose from the list of tools and clinical cases provided below. Each WPBA form will need to be printed off and completed by an assessor (until an electronic version is established).

It is permissible to use Consultants, Associate specialists, staff grade doctors or ST4-6 trainees in EM for the clinical assessment (trainees will need to use non medical staff for their Mini PATs or MSF). A copy must be retained by the trainee and sent to their (overall) ES or clinical tutor.

An ES or CT who identifies that a trainee is struggling to provide documentation or whose evidence shows cause for concern, needs to discuss this with the TPD for remedial action prior to the annual review.
