Forum For Associate Specialists And Staff Grades In Emergency Medicine (FASSGEM)

WELCOME TO THE FASSGEM SECTION OF THE CEM WEBSITE

 WHAT IS FASSGEM?

FASSGEM is the Forum for Associate Specialist and Staff Grade Doctors in Emergency Medicine. This is an integral part of the College but aims to provide a focus for those doctors who are not in training posts and not working as consultants.

Formed in 1997, FASSGEM represents and supports Staff grade and Associate Specialist (SAS) doctors working within emergency Medicine in the UK or the Republic of Ireland. The requirement to have more senior and experienced clinical staff on the 'shop floor' twenty four hours a day had led to an exponential increase in the number of SAS doctors' posts within the specialty. The exact number of SAS doctors is very difficult to determine, but in 2005 it was thought that there were about 800 in post. A recent survey for the Healthcare Commission suggested that there are probably another 400 Trust Grade doctors and Clinical Assistants working in Emergency Departments - these doctors may or not be wishing to obtain training posts.

FASSGEM aims to represent and promote our interests within the College of Emergency Medicine, to promote our educational interests and to enhance collaborative working within our group and other practitioners within the specialty of Emergency Medicine. Membership of FASSGEM is open to anyone working at this level in emergency Medicine - you must also be a member of the college of Emergency Medicine. (This has become a requirement subsequent to the merging of the British Association for Emergency Medicine with the College of Emergency Medicine early in 2008.)

Two conferences are held each year - the Annual conference and Annual General Meeting in November, lasting three to four days, and the one-day Spring Conference in May. Both offer excellent educational and CPD opportunities plus the chance to get to know and compare notes with colleagues from around the country.

FASSGEM has come a long way in the years since it began and its achievements are the result of hard work on the part of its members. FASSGEM is unique amongst the SAS groups with representation at BMA (CCSC), PMETB and CEM regional board level. To maintain our position, we need everyone to contribute, whether at local or national level. Please join us and participate!
